Whether the style of your wedding be traditional or modern, vintage or contemporary, the classic setting of Dumfries House will only enhance it. Dumfries House has romance built into every brick and every corner. The 5th Earl of Dumfries commissioned the building and its contents to capture the heart of his future bride, and it has been capturing hearts ever since. From the drawing room to the bedroom there are stunning examples of original Chippendale furnishings. Wherever you turn, the eye is constantly bathed in luxury, beauty and warmth. Even down to the perfect symmetry of each side of the building matching the other...everything says “family”, everything says “togetherness”, everything says “home”
The very first wedding took place here in 1792 between John, Viscount Mountstuart and Lady Elizabeth Penelope Crichton, from which the line of Marquesses of Bute have sprung ever since. So your first steps together into your future as a married couple are also steps that will echo in history...

Banqueting
Each room, steeped in history, offers its own unique delights.
Inside the House, we are rightly proud to offer the exclusivity of The Great Steward’s Dining Room and our Rothesay Room as sumptuous venues for your banquet. Outside the house we can offer the same quality of service in our beautifully appointed marquee.
The Great Steward of Scotland is one of HRH The Prince of Wales titles, which he is pleased to use in association with Dumfries House, specifically with the Great Steward’s Dining room, and aptly so, as he has dined there himself several times. If you have ever wanted to dine like royalty, not only do we have the setting, but we are very proud to say that our prestigious events team, with efficient warmth, calm experience and with a real sense of occasion, will guide you and your guests through an unforgettable meal.
As Lords, Earls, Marquesses and Princes have done before you; experience a banqueting delight in the sumptuous surroundings of the Great Steward’s dining room. Beneath the solemn gaze of the huge ancestral family portraits hanging there, bathed in the soothing glow of candlight, experience warmth and comfort, bonhomie and cheer as they wash over you and your fellow guests.
The Rothesay Room, from another of HRH Prince Charles’ titles – the Duke of Rothesay, is immediately beneath the Great Steward’s Dining Room, and while less formal than the Great Steward’s Dining Room, still has a charming shared history with it. Originally, these two rooms were commissioned by the 3rd Marquess of Bute to be built as a double height family chapel within Dumfries House. However, the 4th Marquess, who was an avid collector of pretty much everything, needed somewhere to keep his enormous book collection. He then changed the plans, so that the single space for the chapel was divided horizontally and the upper room was designated as the dining room it is today, whilst the room below became a book depository for the Marquess.
So, designed originally as a place of worship, you can see why both rooms are perfect for candlelit celebrations of love, family and friends.
However, should your guest list be of more epic proportions, requiring greater space and more room to kick your heels up, we also offer our marquee, attached to the rear of the House as an alternative venue, which is especially popular on a balmy Scottish evening.
Finally, if your requirements be of a more intimate kind, we also have the Billiard Room and The Tapestry Room, each with an elegance and character of their own. The Billiard Room has the cosy intimacy of a snug in a gentleman’s club, whereas The Tapestry Room has all the grand splendour of the 17th Century French Royal Court, with four Gobelin tapestries adorning the exquisitely carved cedar wall panels.
Whichever dining option you choose, you will not be disappointed. The exquisitely prepared, locally sourced food, coupled with excellent wines and spirits will provide an unforgettable experience.
