What's on. Curator's Choice: Contrasting Commission
The 5th Earl of Dumfries’ commission from Thomas Chippendale and from the Edinburgh wrights Alexander Peter and William Mathie to furnish his new house at Cumnock is paralleled in George III & Queen Charlotte’s commissions from the cabinet-makers William Vile and John Cobb, cabinet-makers to the Great Wardrobe. Rufus Bird, Surveyor of the Queen’s works of Art – Royal Collection Trust, will compare these two important commissions of furniture from London’s leading cabinet-makers and will also consider the various requirements of the furniture in the rooms for which they were commissioned. Glass of fizz on arrival followed by three-course meal in 18th-century style in the Dumfries House Great Stewards Dining Room.
