Kuanyshev Traditional & Craft Skills Centre. Designed to deliver the “Get into Sustainable Building” course and supported by Dumfries House Education and The Prince’s Trust. Comprising a Wood Craft Carpenters Workshop, Stone Craft covered Stone Masons Shed and the original Water-powered Sawmill building which houses toilets and a multi-purpose classroom space.
Housed at the renovated Water Powered Sawmill, the Traditional Skills Centre provides opportunities for students to learn core and transferable skills associated with traditional building skills in Stone Masonry, Dry Stone Walling and Rural Woodcraft as well as an introduction to industry standard construction skills in Plastering, Painting, Plumbing, Electrical and Brickwork supported by tutors from Ayrshire College. The five week “Get into Sustainable Building” course compares traditional and modern techniques and provides students with an overview of various areas of the construction industry. The course is designed to cater for twelve young people aged 16 to 24 who are not in employment, education or training and working closely with our sister charity The Prince’s Trust the course provides experiences and outcomes to open up future employment opportunities. The Traditional Skills Centre also supports school education through activities based around the Primary School residential activities allowing pupils to experience introductory Craft Skills.
